The following outlines the key duties and responsibilities of the Editor:

1. Publication Decisions

The Editor is responsible for making the final decision regarding which articles submitted to the journal should be published. This decision is based on the intellectual value, quality, and relevance of the research, ensuring that the published work contributes meaningfully to legal scholarship and addresses the interests of researchers and readers.

  • The Editor’s decision is informed by the journal's editorial policies, ethical standards, and, when relevant, consultations with other editors, reviewers, or society officers.
  • The Editor must ensure that all decisions comply with applicable legal requirements, including those concerning libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.

2. Fair Play

The Editor is committed to ensuring that all manuscripts are evaluated solely on their intellectual content, with no bias based on the race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy of the authors. The Editor must foster an environment of academic fairness and integrity, where research is assessed based on its merit and contribution to the field of legal research.

3. Confidentiality

The Editor, along with any editorial staff, must maintain the confidentiality of all manuscript submissions. Information about submitted manuscripts must only be disclosed to the following parties:

  • The corresponding author of the manuscript.
  • Reviewers or potential reviewers.
  • Other editorial advisers.
  • The publisher, when applicable.

This confidentiality extends to all aspects of the manuscript, including the content, status of the review, and any decisions made during the editorial process.

4. Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

The Editor must not use any unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript for their own research without the explicit written consent of the author. All privileged information or ideas obtained through the peer review process must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage.

  • The Editor must recuse themselves from considering or making decisions about manuscripts where there are conflicts of interest, including those arising from personal, competitive, collaborative, or institutional relationships with any of the authors or affiliated institutions
  • The Editor must require all contributors to disclose relevant competing interests, including financial interests, and publish any necessary corrections if competing interests are revealed after publication.
  • If conflicts of interest arise post-publication, the Editor should take appropriate actions, such as issuing corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern, where needed.

    • Additionally, the Editor ensures that sponsored supplements and non-peer-reviewed content within the journal undergo the same rigorous peer-review process as the main journal content. Such items must be accepted solely based on academic merit, and commercial considerations must not influence the editorial process. All non-peer-reviewed sections should be clearly identified as such to maintain transparency.


5. Involvement and Cooperation in Investigations

The Editor has an obligation to respond appropriately when ethical complaints or concerns arise regarding a submitted manuscript or published paper. This duty includes:

  • Investigating claims of unethical behavior, such as plagiarism, data manipulation, or authorship disputes, in collaboration with the publisher or relevant authorities
  • Communicating with the authors involved and considering their responses to the complaint or allegation.
  • If an ethical breach is confirmed, the Editor is responsible for taking appropriate action, such as issuing a correction, retraction, or expression of concern, or providing other relevant notifications.
  • Every reported case of unethical publishing behavior must be addressed thoroughly, even if the issue is raised years after the article has been published.

    • The Editor ensures that ethical complaints are dealt with fairly, transparently, and in accordance with the journal’s policies and broader academic standards.
